Twisting Dump Truck
Date
October 2024
This was a time sensitive repair with some tight, very narrow working areas that had to be negotiated. With the limited angle of attack, these welds are not pretty, but they are strong and penetrated well. That's the nature of field repairs sometimes and we still show our work as this is reality. After 6 months these repairs are still holding strong under constant heavy abuse.
This dump truck had cracked brackets where the hydraulic lifts attached to the frame. Wet material would stick in one side of the bed as it would tilt back to unload. It would put a tremendous amount of torsion stress on the brackets and frame, eventually resulting in cracked brackets. To repair, we welded and redrilled the bracket mounting points (drilling out the ends of all cracks to ensure they would not continue to expand). To address the twisting, 3/8" Angle iron was welded to the bracket tabs and tied into the cross member on the frame. After these repairs, there was no further twisting and the truck was more stable with a considerable amount more than it normally would haul and dump.
